The Social Democrats are seen to ?practice what they preach? in
terms of their promotion of women both within the Party and in public
electoral campaigns. Both of the Party?s co-leaders are women. Four
of its six T.D.s are women. Eleven of its eighteen councillors
identify as women. Both the Chair and the Vice-Chair of the Party are
women. Its current interim general secretary is a woman.
However, the Party wishes to lead the way in terms of ensuring that
women achieve political representation in numbers that reflect their
number in society. The Social Democrats recognise that more needs to
be done before this target can become a reality. This proposal aims to
gain insight into the real and perceived blocks to progress in this
core democratic objective.
OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT: To increase the number of women elected for the
Social Democrats in the **Apply on the website** local elections.
SUMMARY OF PROJECT: To conduct an in-depth survey of particular
cohorts of women in order to identify the decision-making processes
undertaken by women who are active in the Social Democrats or
otherwise interested in politics, the outcomes of those processes, and
potential actions that could be taken by the Social Democrats to
encourage more women to represent the Social Democrats in the next
local elections and to maximise their chances of success in their
respective campaigns.
